72 holes wasn’t enough at The Players Championship as Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun found themselves tied at the top. Rory, who held a three shot lead midway through the final round shot one over in the home stretch and Spaun made birdie on 14 and 16 to tie him at -12.
Due to a couple of hours of weather delays in the final round, there wasn’t enough daylight to play the three hole aggregate playoff on Sunday, so the pair would head back on Monday morning to see the tournament out.
In the playoff, which was holes 16-17-18, Spaun would start by missing a 30 footer for birdie, while Rory would make a short birdie putt to take a one shot lead before heading to 17. That’s where things went downhill for Spaun. What he says was a misjudgment of wind, but what looked more like a misjudgment of adrenaline, would result in his ball sailing the green into the water. He’d take his drop, hit an approach on, and two putt for triple bogey. Rory was safely aboard and while he’d three put for the bogey, the three shot lead was more than enough heading into the final hole.
Rory becomes the first European player to win The Players twice!
Congratulations to Rory McIlroy!
No time off for the PGA Tour after their signature event as they head to Palm Harbor for the Valspar Championship where Peter Malnati will look to defend his title at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course.
What looked like it was going to be a duel for the ages between the old and the new guard with Dustin Johnson and Joaquin Niemann tied at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round of LIV Golf Singapore, turned out to be a runaway for the young Chilean.
DJ opened with a fantastic round of 63 on Friday, and Joaquin posted the best score of the field on Saturday with a 64, which had the two tied at the top. Niemann would open the final round with five birdies on his first 8 holes and DJ would make pars and a couple of bogeys.
That put Niemann firmly in the driver’s seat, and he’d cross the finish line with little to no stress after that. When all was said and done he’d have followed his second round 64 with a final round 65 to win by five shots over Brooks Koepka.
Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs GC would win their third straight event as they firmly establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with on the team leaderboard. While Sergio led the way in Hong Kong, it was his young recruits that carried Fireballs across the finish line this time with Puig finishing in solo 4th, Ancer tied for 10th, and Luis Masaveu tied for 14th.
Congratulations to Joaquin Niemann and Fireballs GC!
LIV Golf takes a two week break before heading to Trump Doral for their annual event in Miami.
